Uncertainty is good. It's even better to know for sure something is false but have it as your best guess. But if you know something, and it's false, that's bad.
I'd prefer to know something, instead of not knowing. Telling me things is good – even if you have nothing to do with them. But telling people false things should be much, much more penalized, socially, than it is now.
Lying, is, as always, so toxic that it'd be fair to permanently cut ties with any non-family who planned to lie to you. Some people panic, that's understandable. But they should correct the lie as soon as possible.
And correcting mistakes should be done as soon as you know the statements were mistaken.
