I am not totally certain America democracy has enough systematic roadblocks to stop truly bad things from happening, and it seems they are weaker and weaker over time anyway.

But democracy, in general, is unstable: you can get literally any outcome if you can choose just one of the two options. The most obvious solution to this is that, not only must you have only two options in an election, all preferences must be flattened to exist along a single dimension of preference.

This... is not good. It's okay for a coward politician to be a 'moderate' by contriving to have a median opinion, but encouraging the world to view things simplistically, and not have distinct preferences, well, that just stinks.

Perhaps we ought not to try and answer a great deal of questions using these mechanisms of involuntary imposition.
